Getting dual-head X working on a Toshiba Tecra A4 with an NVidia 6600 Go
Getting this configuration working required many annoying hard locks and subsequent reboots, so I thought I would put the results up so that somebody else can benefit from the pain.
My Tecra A4 has an nVidia 6600 Go, so that is what this configuration reflects. I believe there are other Tecra A4's with ATI, in which case you will need to adjust accordingly. As an aside, from my experiences with a 9600 mobility, the ATI drivers are absolutely atrocious.
Here is the xorg.conf which places my external DELL 2405FPW 24" Monitor as the primary display (:0.0) and the built-in digital flat panel as the secondary display (:0.1).
I run OpenBox on both displays. I also use dualmouse.c from the Gentoo Wiki to Ctrl-Alt-Tab between my displays.
Why do it?
I use the secondary laptop monitor for IRC (EPIC) and E-Mail (Mutt) in two vertically split panes. I've heard that other people use it for debugging graphical applications running on :0.0, which would be quite handy.
